The keys are of an ivory grained celluloid (a precursor to todays plastic keys). Delightful to play, these keys have never chipped or yellowed. Many makers throughout history have experimented with various materials to achieve long wearing key tops. The vast bulk of German, English and Australian pianos feature materials such as whale bone, ivory, celluloid and another material concocted of shells and eggs. All have their strengths and weaknesses and we as restorers strive to maintain the original.
